Educating patients about
Breast Augmentation
from a medical perspective!

This web site was created to inform patients about breast augmentation from a medical perspective and dispel many of the rumors which are passed around public forums and non-medical web sites.
A breast augmentation, when performed by an experienced surgeon, can safely enhance the natural beauty of a woman's body. AllAboutBreastImplants.com will help educate the patient about both the safety and the risk of breast augmentation from a medical perspective. As with any medical procedure there is a potential for complications and there are certain things the patient should know about augmentation when entering into this procedure. When considering augmentation, multiple variables should be considered. These include the position of the implant, the type of implant and the placement of the incision.
The implant can be placed in the subglandular position (over the muscle), or submuscular (under the muscle). There are many benefits of placing the implant under the muscle which include better shape, lower risk of capsular contracture and improved mammogram. Other things that should be considered are the type of implant and the placement of the incision. Types of implants include saline and silicone. One must also consider the shape and texture of the implant as well.
All these factors should be considered prior to undergoing an augmentation. One of the most important decisions maybe the placement of the incision. Sometimes factors such as the breast shape or size may necessitate a certain incision; however, this should be discussed with the surgeon. Options for incisions include periarealor incision, inframammary incision, or an axillary incision. Most surgeons have abandoned the umbilical incision because of the high complication rate. Our preference at Destin Plastic Surgery is to perform a small incision in the hair bearing portion of the axilla. This is a technically advanced approach to breast augmentation which requires the use of sophisticated cameras and retractors for placement of the implant; however, this allows for gentle manipulation of tissues and precise placement of the implant while avoiding a scar on the breast. Scars on the breast can be unsightly and detract from the overall beauty of the breast.

FDA Lifts Ban on Silicone Implants!
After rigorous scientific review, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Friday November 17th, 2006, approved the marketing of silicone gel-filled breast implants made by two companies for breast reconstruction in women of all ages and breast augmentation in women ages 22 and older. "This is great news and will greatly improve the outcome for many women who seek to improve the appearance of their breast but have had limited options with the previous saline implants." said Dr Ennis. "There are many women who would like to enhance the appearance of their breast but may not have enough breast tissue to adequately cover a saline implant. This could lead to problems with rippling. Silicone implants will offer these women new options that were not previously available with saline implants." said Dr Burden. Silicone implants may have significantly less rippling in some patients. The doctors and staff at Destin Plastic Surgery have been investigators and involved with the FDA approved study allowing women to receive silicone breast implants since 1997. Both Dr. Burden and Dr. Ennis are among the top plastic surgeons in the nation in regards to placement of saline and silicone implants for women who want breast enhancement. They have been performing breast augmentations with silicone gel implants under the FDA guidelines since 1997. More information is also available at the FDA's web site http://www.fda.gov/cdrh/breastimplants .
Dr. William R Burden, MD, FACS and Dr. L. Scott Ennis, MD, FACS are known for their experience and dedication to staying in the forefront of leading technology in plastic surgery.
