Destin Plastic Surgeons Selected for National Implant Study

For Immediate Release – Destin, Florida (January 27, 2009) –

Drs. William Burden and Scott Ennis of Destin Plastic Surgery and Dr. Robert Rey of E!'s “Dr. 90210” fame were among a group of select plastic surgeons chosen to participate in a new breast implant study. Only 30 plastic surgeons nationwide were selected to participate.

Mentor Corporation, a worldwide leader in breast implant manufacturing, held its investigator meeting for its new adjustable silicone gel implant in Las Vegas on January 26th. Dr. Hilton Becker, who helped design the new implant, was the featured lecturer. The adjustable gel implant in clinical trial represents a new concept in breast implant design.

This select group of surgeons were chosen based on their experience with silicone implants as well as national and international credentials.  Drs. Burden and Ennis are the only plastic surgeons in Northwest Florida, Alabama and Mississippi involved in the study.

“It is an honor to be among the nation’s top plastic surgeons leading our field in the newest and latest technique and product. I have had experience with the Becker 50/50 implant and will be offering the procedure using an underarm/ no scar on the breast approach,” said Dr. William Burden.

“We are pleased that our extensive surgical experience has garnered us this opportunity. We feel it is a great boost to have this region included with larger destinations including Beverly Hills, New York and Las Vegas,” echoed Dr. Scott Ennis.

This implant is currently in use in Europe and Mentor Corporation will be seeking FDA approval in The United States. At this time, it is considered an investigational device and is only available in the clinical study. Drs. Burden and Ennis will be investigators in the clinical studies.

Educating patients about

Breast Augmentation

from a medical perspective!

For more information on other procedures, please visit Destin Plastic Surgery's comprehensive site at

This web site was created to inform patients about breast augmentation from a medical perspective and dispel many of the rumors which are passed around public forums and non-medical web sites.

A breast augmentation, when performed by an experienced surgeon, can safely enhance the natural beauty of a woman's body. AllAboutBreastImplants.com will help educate the patient about both the safety and the risk of breast augmentation from a medical perspective. As with any medical procedure there is a potential for complications and there are certain things the patient should know about augmentation when entering into this procedure.  When considering augmentation, multiple variables should be considered. These include the position of the implant, the type of implant and the placement of the incision.

The implant can be placed in the subglandular position (over the muscle), or submuscular (under the muscle).  There are many benefits of placing the implant under the muscle which include better  shape, lower risk of capsular contracture and improved mammogram.  Other things that should be considered are the type of implant and the placement of the incision.  Types of implants include saline and silicone. One must also consider the shape and texture of the implant as well.

All these factors should be considered prior to undergoing an augmentation.  One of the most important decisions maybe the placement of the incision.  Sometimes factors such as the breast shape or size may necessitate a certain incision; however, this should be discussed with the surgeon.  Options for incisions include periarealor incision, inframammary incision, or an axillary incision.  Most surgeons have abandoned the umbilical incision because of the high complication rate.  Our preference at Destin Plastic Surgery is to perform a small incision in the hair bearing portion of the axilla.  This is a technically advanced approach to breast augmentation which requires the use of sophisticated cameras and retractors for placement of the implant; however, this allows for gentle manipulation of tissues and precise placement of the implant while avoiding a scar on the breast.  Scars on the breast can be unsightly and detract from the overall beauty of the breast.
